Is the Cyberplatform for me?

The goal of the Cyberplatform is to optimize and accelerate the taxonomic workflow, starting with field work, collection and observation, and ending with publication. It is largely geared towards taxonomists working as part of a community wishing to work on shared datasets.

More advances in EDIT Map Viewer

The EDIT team in Brussels (former in Madrid) is pleased to announce that the currently developed EDIT mapViewer ( already allows not only the upload of user point data, but also its filtering and symbolization. This is an essential and important difference between the last announcement (dated in 02/15/2008). The next step will be the integration of tools to make easier the printing of the resulting maps. The insertion of user data must be in a comma-separated-values text file format (CSV extension).

Advances in component C5.31 Application for distribution maps: Upload and display of user point data

An essential part of EDIT Work Package 5.4 (Geospatial Component) is the development of a free available and easy to use tool able to produce maps for those taxonomists not experienced in the use of GIS programs. Geographic information is nowadays an important part of the information associated with any collected or observed specimen, and this information constitutes an important source of data for basic and applied purposes. At present, this web based application is free available in the EDIT Geoplatform mapViewer ( for the use of all taxonomist community. Tools for the nascent CDM community

The Common Data Model (CDM) is at the heart of the EDIT Platform for Cybertaxonomy – based on the hard-won lessons from more than 10 years of modeling taxonomic data, it describes the information taxonomists process within the Platform.

The EDIT developer wiki now contains a new introduction to the planned Community Websites that allow webpublication of taxonomic data.

WP5.6 & IdentifyLife Meeting in Paris

WP5.4 (MNHN) met with Kevin Thiele (Western Australian Herbarium) to discuss IdentifyLife and Lucid, a programme designed to manage descriptive data for identification.

In the context of EDIT, WP5.6 will start testing a range of descriptive programmes (e.g. Delta-Access, Delta-Intkey, EFG2, IKBS, Linnaeus II, Lucid, Navikey, Xper2 etc.) as well as having at least two knowledge databases that are accessible on these different systems. It appears that CSV files could be a possible way to exchange data between Lucid and Xper2 (i.e. SDD schema would be preferable in the future). WP5.6 results will appear on the WP5 blog.


WP5 Open Biodiversity Applications and Services Review Platform

Markus Döring and Andreas Kohlbecker are busy preparing the open biodiversity applications and services review platform (we are still finding an appropriate acronym for it). They hope to get it online within next month’s component deadline. We will post an announcement once the review platform it is up and running. Watch this space!
