C5.148 Import of library catalogues from EDIT institutions

The mechanism to import library catalogues into the Global References Index to Biodiversity (GRIB) , as well as bibliographic data from open access repositories to allow linking to electronic full texts, follows what has been described in the EDIT component 5.150 : 1st the delivery of the data, 2nd its conversion and 3rd the updating into the GRIB database.

C5.152 Enhancement of the references index incorporating results of the User Review and Technical Review

This report presents the changes that have been made on the global references Index to Biodiversity “GRIB” (http://grib.gbv.de/) based on the suggestions defined in Component C5.149 Index of references User Review and Technical Review. Some of the suggested changes have been implemented (indicated with “Done” or “Partially Done”) and some will be finished within the next weeks under the Biodiversity Heritage Library for Europe (BHL-Europe) project (marked “Pending”).

C5.151 Sustainability review. A review of the commitments already made and the further commitments

The EDIT ViTaL Activity aimed at building an index of deduplicated references of library catalogues from natural history institution libraries. This index – called Global References Index to Biodiversity short GRIB (http://grib.gbv.de/) is designed to serve scientists in their search for relevant biodiversity related literature and librarians in their task to digitise legacy literature to make it available free and open online. In the beginning of 2010, a cooperation between EDIT Activity 5.3 and BHL-Europe WP2 has been established.

C5.150 Design of mechanism to update bibliographic data from the libraries into the references index

The EDIT/ViTaL index of references (Global References Index to Biodiversity, called GRIB1) is updated on a regular basis the timing as well as the method depend on the partners providing the data. The method of updating depends on the technological infrastructure of the partner (if the partner system supports the Z39.503 protocol or an OAI-PMH4 interface for example).

C5.149 Index of references User Review and Technical Review

This report presents the results of the user and technical review of the Global References Index to Biodiversity (GRIB). The EDIT ViTaL Activity, Work Package 5.3, aims at building an index of deduplicated references of library catalogues from natural history institutions libraries. The GRIB is designed to serve two groups of users: scientists and librarians.

C5.106 Implementation of an im-/export data interface to and from CDM

The Global References Index to Biodiversity (GRIB) prototype (http://grib.gbv.de/) is being implemented by the Head office of the Common Library Network (VZG). For exporting data the GRIB offers a Search/Retrieval via URL interface (SRU) which allows CDM based EDIT platform components to find data in the GRIB and retrieve those in several standard formats. On the other hand the GRIB can harvest and import data from the CDM store via the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH).

C5.147 Implementation of mechanism to nominate literature items for digitisation

The Global References Index to Biodiversity (GRIB) prototype by the Head office of the Common Library Network (VZG) has been enhanced by a Digitisation Management Tool. The URL of the GRIB has changed to http://gso.gbv.de/DB=1.83/ to providing full functionality of this tool. It serves two groups of users: scientists and librarians. Scientists in the need for online access to digitised literature can search the GRIB and nominate titles to be digitised, that are not available online yet.

C5.146 Import of freely available bibliographic metadata of digital resources from BHL to allow linking

The Global References Index to Biodiversity (GRIB) prototype by the Head office of the Common Library Network GBV (VZG) is the joint literature index of EDIT’s Virtual Taxonomic Library (ViTaL) and the Biodiversity Heritage Library for Europe (BHL-Europe). The GRIB has now been greatly enhanced by adding the bibliographic records from the Biodiversity Heritage Library (BHL), including hyperlinks to the digitised items.

C5.145 Import of test sets of selected libraries consisting of a) bibliographic data from the library catalogues and b) licence

The prototype of the references index (GBV demonstrator for the EDIT/BHL-Europe GRIB) was built by the German common library network GBV (Gemeinsamer Bibliotheksverbund, Göttingen). It allows users to browse and search titles held by libraries of EDIT member institutions and will include library catalogue data from BHL-Europe/BHL institutions in the future.Test sets from FUB-BGBM, MFN, NNM Naturalis and NHML have been imported into and are in the process of being deduplicated within the GBV demonstrator.

M5.26 Soft Launch of ViTaL

This report documents the soft launch in July 2009 of the Virtual Taxonomic Library (ViTaL), hosted at the Natural History Museum (London). The Virtual Taxonomic Library ViTaL is a component of the EDIT Platform for Cybertaxonomy, relaying on Common Data Model and aims to provide bibliographic services to aid the discovery and accessibility of taxonomically relevant literature.
